THE Westfield Matildas will set a new benchmark in using social media to connect with fans during the FIFA 2011 Women’s World Cup in Germany, which kicks off Sunday night Australian time.
For the first time, the Westfield Matildas will be Tweeting their way through a FIFA tournament and sharing behind-the-scenes experiences through Facebook.
“Women’s football is the fastest growing team sport in the country and we know there are thousands of young budding football stars who will turn to social media for their first source of information on the tournament,” said FFA CEO Ben Buckley.
“The team has seven players under the age of 20 and an average age of just under 22 so they represent a generation that’s grown up using social media.
"FFA took those factors at into consideration when deciding to relax the normal policy around social media to allow the players to connect with their fans back home.”
Westfield Matildas coach Tommy Sermanni and captain Melissa Barbieri will be among the key figures to give their personal insights via Twitter.
Exclusive photos and the latest from inside the Westfield Matildas camp will be found on Facebook.
