Australia's World Cup campaign kicks off tonight with the Matildas desperate to record their first-ever World Cup victory.

A relaxed Matildas coach Tommy Sermanni says there'll be no surprises in the starting line-up, which is tipped to see the duo of Sarah Walsh and Catlin Munoz leading the frontline in Hangzhou tonight against the lowly ranked Ghana.
The side is desperate for a win. A loss would pile the pressure on the Aussies in a tough group. Ghana is the lowest ranked team in the tournament at 47 and the Africans have denied the Matildas at the last two tournaments recording a win and a draw in their only two meetings against Australia.
Matildas left-back Heather Garriock told FourFourTwo magazine earlier this year that such an “unpredictable” opponent has given Australia trouble in the past. Sermanni agreed.
“They are unpredictable, but they do have lapses,” he added. “That's why it's important to keep our shape against them.” Only four Matildas remain from the last time the two sides met in 2003.
“It's crucial for everyone to win their first game. It's not a matter of life and death if we don't win. Football's a funny game and we could still qualify. But we're going into the game with a good, confident frame of mind.”
Austalia then goes onto to play highly rated Norway on September 15 (10pm AEST) in the same city before the final group match against the tough Canadians on September 19 (7pm AEST) in Chengdu.
So it's vital this first match is a first victory. Sermanni added the conditions in Hangzhou were not as oppressive as many had predicted. “It's not as polluted here and the heat isn't as bad in the last few days, which should make a world of difference.”
The Aussie coach was also less than impressed by Argentina's first game of the tournament, an 11-0 drubbing by reigning champions Germany, which has not given the Cup a credible start.
“They were very poor, especially their goalkeeper. I don't think you'll see any more of these types of results though.”
The top two teams in Australia ’s group will progress to the quarter-finals and meet the top two teams of Group D which features China, Denmark, Brazil and New Zealand. The tournament winner takes home US$1 milllion.
The Matildas' match can be seen live on SBS TV tonight at 7pm.
