The 36-year-old has been in career best form of late and scored an impressive 19 goals during the most recent A-League season to help the Mariners to the Championship.

McBreen was chased by opposition A-League clubs and overseas teams, but said leaving the Mariners never really entered his mind.

"I've stated many times that I wanted to be here and we had plenty of discussions about it," McBreen said.

"I'm just glad to get it all sorted out and to be here for another year.

"There was a lot of talk about clubs overseas and other A-League teams, but nothing really materialised that I was happy with. And I said it time and time again that I was so happy here."

McBreen has not ruled out extending his career past his new contract, but said one-year deals were all he could rely on in the twilight of his career.

"He (Mariners Head Coach Graham Arnold) said at my age it's a year-by-year basis, so I'll just go out there and try and do the same next year and get another contract," he said.

"But age is just a number. If you're doing the goods why shouldn't you keep playing?"

McBreen and the rest of the Mariners squad are currently gearing up for the first leg of their AFC Champions League Round of 16 clash against Chinese team Guangzhou Evergrande.
