The visitors conceded a second half penalty after Stephen Ward was adjudged to have pushed Louis Saha in the box.

But McCarthy was annoyed with the events surrounding the foul.

"Apart from it not being a corner in the first place it was extremely soft I thought," he said.

"I think if he was trying to nick Saha's wallet he wouldn't go down as easily so that makes it difficult for him but I didn't think it was a penalty."

"Ward was fantastic so to have a penalty given against him for that, well he didn't deserve it."

McCarthy went on to express his disappointment at not holding out for a point and keeping an unbeaten run going after victory over Wigan.

"I thought we were good for a point," he said.

"It exacerbates the disappointment because I thought we played well, we’ve not peppered their goal but neither have they ours."

"They're the home side so you expect them to have probably more of the play and better of it."

"I was disappointed to concede a goal when we did because I thought we were in charge at that point having scored, we were playing well."

Meanwhile, Everton manager David Moyes was delighted with his side's performance.

"We had a few chances we didn't finish off. We certainly didn't deserve to be a goal down."

"I thought we played okay, put a lot of balls into the box and if there was anybody looked the most likely it was us."

"We either didn't get enough people in the box or didn't get on the end of things and they got the penalty kick which could have quite easily turned it."

"It was a great credit to the lads that they kept going and they deserve a lot of credit for pulling the game back."

"I thought the boys at the back stuck at it and Leon Osman has had a really good game in midfield today."

"We just seemed to not quite have enough at the end to maybe get us out of sight with a goal or two."

"I can't remember a chance Wolves had against us, they didn't have any chance. The game was tight and we ended up winning it with two set pieces."

Moyes revealed the extent of the injury crisis at Everton admitting that Jack Rodwell could be absent for some time and that captain Phil Jagielka is playing through injections.

"Jack Rodwell came off in the Sweden game with a rib injury," he said.

"We had him X-rayed and he's not fractured a rib but one of the muscles in between the ribs is twisted."

"Jagielka has a broken toe and at the moment until his toe heals he has got to take an injection to get through every game."
