Steve McClaren today hailed his FC Twente side after they secured progress to the last 32 of the UEFA Cup with a 2-1 win over Schalke in Group A last night.
The former England boss got the better of Fred Rutten, his predecessor at the Enschede club, with Rutten now under severe pressure at the German giants.
McClaren said: "This is a great achievement, it is excellent for the fans, the chairman and the players. They all worked hard for this. FC Twente has grown in the last few months. That made this possible.
"Maybe we had a bit of luck. But that doesn't take away that the victory was well deserved. We did what we had to do - work hard and play well.
"We may celebrate this for a couple of hours. And then we concentrate again on our next match, against Sparta Rotterdam."
Twente took the lead through Rob Wielaert in the second minute and Kenneth Perez added a second nine minutes into the second half, with Gerald Asamoah pulling one back for Schalke (77).
