The 25-year-old Sydney-born defender left Scottish Premier League club Hamilton Academical in the European summer, before finding his way to the Iron.

McClenahan, who was watched by Socceroos selectors prior to the World Cup, signed a short-term deal with Scunthorpe earlier this week which keeps him at Glanford Park until January.

"I'm really excited about the opportunity that's been given to me," McClenahan told The Iron Player. "Hopefully now I can move on and try and push into the team.

"I think I'm a bit off the pace at the moment as I'm not at full fitness right now but hopefully over the next couple of weeks we can get that sorted and then push on and get an opportunity.

"My first aim is to get fit and then it's really about waiting for an opportunity to get in the team."

The former West Ham right-back will face stiff competition winning a regular game in his preferred position with Cliff Byrne and Eddie Nolan other options for Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins.

"It's good to have competition here," McClenahan said. "It's a tough league, there are a lot of games and I think it's important to have a number of players here who can perform in numerous positions.

"When players get suspended or injured you need to have back-up so hopefully I can take my chance when the opportunity comes.

"Normally I'm a right-back and I'm fairly solid defensively.

"I like to get forward and cross balls, I'm fairly quick, and I like passing the ball and keeping it on the ground too, so hopefully I can show fans.

"I'd been down here for a few years before I went to Scotland and it's another good opportunity here at a good club in a strong league.

"I feel like I can make the step-up to the Championship.

"I wouldn't have signed for the club if I didn't feel I could do it, and I'm sure the manager wouldn't have signed me either."

Scunthorpe travel to QPR in the Championship on Saturday.
