The 25-year-old former Olyroo joined the Championship club in August on a short-term contract which expires in January.

McClenahan has regularly been in Scunthorpe matchday squads but he finally made his maiden appearance for the club on Saturday as a 45th minute substitute in the 3-2 loss at Derby County.

The Sydney-born former West Ham junior told the Scunthorpe Telegraph he was keen to win a permanent deal to stay at Glanford Park.

"My deal here is until January, so I don't really know what's happening from there yet," he said.

"I know there are a few players on loan and different things and I don't think the manager has made any decisions on what's happening in the future. It's just a matter of waiting and seeing.

"I've enjoyed my time here and they are a great bunch of boys. I think the club can do well in this league, so I would definitely like to stay."

McClenahan explained he was desperate to be given a first-team chance to prove to manager Ian Baraclough he was worthy of keeping.

Scunthorpe are currently hit by a number of injuries to defenders which may offer McClenahan his chance to impress.

"Ultimately you want to be given a chance and see how it goes," he said. "If the manager doesn't think it's good enough, that's his opinion.

"But if you don't get a chance to show what you can do, then I suppose you feel a bit frustrated. It's been hard because the team's been doing pretty well.

"I'm a footballer and I want to play, I don't want to sit on the bench. I want to be out every game, I want to do well and impress every game.

"But sometimes when you come to a new club you just need to be a bit patient and wait for things to happen. Hopefully it will get better from here.

"There have been injuries recently, so hopefully I get my chance now."

He added: "It's not nice to say, but that's why you have a squad in a sense, so when players get injured or suspended you've got other people to come in and do a job.

"It was good to play at Derby. It's been a long time coming, so it was good to get out there and contribute something for the team.

"It was my first appearance of the year so was reasonably happy with how it went. Hopefully I'll be able to get some more and improve on that."

Scunthorpe face Coventry City this Saturday in the English Championship.
