The Royals surrendered a 2-1 lead after Pavel Pogrebnyak and Danny Guthrie put the visitors in the lead following Frank Lampard's opener from the penalty spot.

But Reading could not hold onto their lead as goals from Gary Cahill, Fernando Torres and a late Branislav Ivanovic strike sealed the win.

McDermott, however, was furious that the assistant referee did not see Torres in an offside position as he gave them the lead.

"We didn't deserve to lose and I thought we were going to win it," McDermott told reporters.

"I'm gutted. The linesman has got the decision wrong for the third goal. It's not a good night for him, and unfortunately that means it's not a good night for us.

"It was clearly offside, which is really disappointing. People make mistakes and he made one tonight."

Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo was delighted with the 100 percent start.

"We are very pleased with six points after two games. I was very happy with the team performance for long periods of the game," he said.

"I think we lost a little bit of our composure when Reading scored the equaliser, and the second goal. But we started off very, very well - some great football and finished off very strongly again.

"I thought the second (Reading) goal was just a mistake and the first goal was a great goal by (Pavel) Pobgrebnyak.

"Our defender was close to him, but he just got ahead of him and scored a great goal.

"We certainly, in the second half, when we were 2-1 down, were certainly very offensive and we lost our balance a bit. But we had to take a risk because we were behind."
