AUSSIE striker Scott McDonald hopes the two-year deal with English Championship side Millwall he signed overnight will help him onto the plane to Brazil 2014.
Manager Steve Lomas revealed McDonald is keen to stay in the reckoning for the national team and the World Cup despite his last Socceroos appearance being almost one year ago.
Lomas told the club’s official website: "I've watched Scott throughout his career and he has a proven track record, scoring at better than one in three games over a long period.
"He works hard for the team, links play well and can operate in different formations.
"The great thing from our point of view is that he's hungry to do well. He's got his eye on next summer's World Cup for Australia and knows that to get into the squad he needs to be scoring goals for Millwall."
The 29-year-old left Middlesbrough by mutual consent after three and half years at Riverside where he notched up 45 goals and 23 assists in 124 appearances.
The Lions will be hoping he brings his shooting boots. The club finished 20th last season, just two points above the relegation zone and with the second lowest goals scored tally in the league.
Millwall have had good success with Aussies in the past with Socceroos Lucas Neill and Tim Cahill both enjoying lengthy stints at the club.
McDonald is Lomas’s sixth summer signing as he attempts to overhaul the underperforming squad, and could line up for his new team as early as Saturday in a testimonial game against Rayo Vallecano.
He will wear the number 27 shirt – the same number he wore in his first season for Glasgow giants Celtic where he scored a staggering 51 goals in 88 appearances between 2007-2010.
But despite enjoying good form in front of goal for his clubs the Victorian has had little luck for country.
In 26 appearances for the Socceroos he has yet to score a goal.
His last appearance for the Green and Gold was in August last year when he came on as a second half subsitute in Australia’s 3-1 loss to Scotland.
