McDonald has been a prolific scorer at club level in Scotland with Celtic, but is yet to find the back of the next for Australia despite 11 games for the Socceroos.
But the 25-year-old is confident he will be able to score that elusive first international goal sooner rather than later.
"It's an ongoing saga and it will be until I score, said McDonald today. "Of course I want to be scoring goals but as soon as I'm off the field, it's 'okay, next one, lets try again'.
"Hopefully it's only a matter of time before I get the first one, and once you get that first one it will kick on from there."
McDonald was holidaying with his girlfriend when the last World Cup was being played in Germany three years ago, but this time round he wants to be a part of the action.
"I wanted to be there last time, no question about that, and when you're young you think 'I should be there," he added.
"But the truth is I wasn't ready, simple as that, and there was a lot of quality players there already."
