A passionate football supporter and keen player himself, McFadden played alongside Diego Maradona in ‘Soccer Aid’ for UNICEF.

“I am very honoured to be joining Football Superstar,” said McFadden today. "Football has always been a big part of my life and I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to bring my passion to Australian television.

“Football Superstar will give the next hugely talented footballer an incredible platform to achieve their dream and I can’t wait to get out there and meet them.”

A national hunt is underway to unearth Australia’s undiscovered football talent. The new series is the only Australian television program of its kind with the winner walking off the pitch with a season long contract with Sydney FC youth team alongside a scholarship with Macquarie University, as well as the chance to be one of the new faces of Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain, sponsor of the series.

Nationwide tryouts are currently under way to select talented unsigned players to be part of Football Superstar. Of these, 15 hopefuls will all be chosen to live in a state-of-the art mansion giving them a taste of the potential footballer’s lifestyle.

Here, they will also face their biggest off-the-pitch challenge – getting on with each other whilst competing for that coveted professional contract.

The backbone of the program will be the drama week by week as the lads go through the highs and lows of their trial period and are challenged off the field to see how they'd cope living the public lifestyle of a high-profile footballer.

Throughout the series, the hopefuls will be whittled down by an expert judging panel from Sydney FC’s coaching staff. The winning football apprentice is anointed Australia’s first Football Superstar by Sydney FC boss John Kosmina.

"The overall goal for Football Superstar is not only to unearth undiscovered Australian football talent, but to offer development in the hope of seeing this young player progress to a professional football career," said a Fox8 spokesman.

The eight-part reality series is due for broadcast from June 2008.
