DENMARK-BASED young Socceroos striker Brent McGrath says he's aiming to peak at the right time after scoring in Brondby's final pre-season game on the weekend.
McGrath, who made his senior Australia debut in March's friendly win over Germany, was named as Brondby's man of the match after an enterprising display in attack where he scored in Sunday's 2-1 loss to Hansa Rostock.
The goal came just days out from the announcement of the final squad for the Young Socceroos at the Under-20 World Cup in Colombia along with Brondby's opening Superliga game next Sunday against Aalborg BK.
“I do what I can to impress the coaching staff,” the 20-year-old, who has been in the Brondby system since 2006, told the club's website.
“It is shortly before the season starts that you need to peak. And it's clear when you score that you are hungry for more.”
McGrath made 10 Superliga appearances, scoring one goal for Brondby last term and he'll be hoping to build on that in 2011-12.
The Australian played a full game against Hansa and was dangerous throughout the contest before netting an 88th-minute header, after Brondby trailed 2-0 at the break.
“I am happy to hit the target, although it is unfortunate to lose. We were not good in the first half but better in the second,” McGrath said.
“When we came out after the break, we had a target to win the second half, and we succeeded in that.”
