New Socceroo Riley McGree didn’t get a lot of love out of Australia coach Ange Postecoglou during the recent camp but says that’s to be expected.
The 18-year-old, who was on Thursday named the NAB Young Footballer of the Month, received high praise from Postecoglou upon his shock call-up to the Australia squad to face Iraq and UAE in World Cup qualifying.
However, McGree revealed he didn’t have a lot of one-on-one time with Postecoglou.
“When I came in and first met him, I shook his hand, said ‘hi’, he said ‘welcome’ and not too much else, I turned around and sat down,” McGree recalled.
“I didn’t speak to him too much. I didn’t directly sit down and have a chat with him.
“He’s the boss. He doesn’t say much. He just tells you want he wants and that’s it.
“He’s very direct about what he wants and if he doesn’t like it he’ll tell you.”
McGree added he never expected any special treatment not does Postecoglou give any.
“He definitely communicates but I don’t think directly one on one,” McGree said.
“It’s more the team will be sat down, when we have our meetings he’s very passionate about what he wants and very driven to get what he wants.
“It’s not individual communication, it’s more in front of the team.”
The Adelaide United midfielder didn’t receive any game-time during the two qualifiers but said it was a positive experience.
“It was a very good experience especially as a young player,” he said.
“It was good to be mixing with some great players and some great coaches. I just took everything in my stride and learned as much as possible.”
The Gawler-raised teenager is now targeting a dream debut for Australia during the next World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia in his home town Adelaide in June.
What will work against McGree is Adelaide’s A-League season will conclude in mid-April, while their final AFC Champions League group game is May 9.
“Of course I’m hoping to be a part of it,” he said.
“Every player is going to push to be a part of it. I’m going to give it as much as I can for my club and hopefully get a spot.”
