Newcastle Jets loanee Riley McGree says one of the key factors in returning to the A-League this season was to prove to Belgian club Club Brugge that he was good enough for first-team European football.
The 19-year-old made his debut for Newcastle off the bench in their 2-2 draw to Melbourne City away last week.
McGree had just come back from making two appearances for Australia's Under-23s at the AFC Under-23 Championships in China.
The teenager was happy with his game and felt it was important to get some minutes under his belt as he is yet to make a senior appearance for Brugge.
“Of course there are some frustrations, any club you go to, you want to be playing first-team football so I thought I’d come back and give it a shot here and hopefully prove something,” McGree told FourFourTwo.
“I’ve learnt a lot in Belgium, on and off the field, I think I’ve definitely matured as a player.
“The club has been very welcoming, everyone has been good and I felt really taken care of. I knew a few boys from U-23s before I signed, so it’s been a good transition.”
Former Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou gave McGree a chance in the national team camp early last year when he was still with Adelaide United, but is still yet to earn a senior cap.
McGree has also been touted by many fans as a potential Socceroos bolter for the World Cup, along with Daniel Arzani, Dimi Petratos, Josh Brillante and Daniel De Silva.

The midfielder said Newcastle’s form this year enticed him to come home as they currently sit second on the table.
“Newcastle were doing well this season, they play some good football and the style that I play suits the team,” he said.
“It was a great feeling coming on against City, getting some game time off the bench and making a positive contribution.
“I just wanted to come in and affect the game, do something and hopefully get the result. We had to settle for a draw last week which is a little bit disappointing.”
Jets captain Nigel Boogaard also praised McGree and was excited for what he can bring this season.
“Personally I think when he came onto the field, he changed the game and he has an ability to get in between the lines and drive at their back four,” Boogaard said.
“I think it put us in good stead, hopefully we’ll see more of that as he integrates more into the team and positive signs from him.”
Newcastle meet Melbourne Victory in a triple-header clash on Saturday.
