Olyroos midfielder Riley McGree has given a brief insight into Graham Arnold's focus heading into the AFC U23 Championship qualifiers.
The Melbourne City playmaker has played a large role in both the Olyroos pre-qualifier friendlies, a 2-0 loss against club side Petaling FC and a 1-1 draw against Malaysia's U23s.
He believes the two warm-up fixtures have given the side a chance to synchronise, and they'll now be ready for a tough series of upcoming fixtures. Qualifying for the U23 Championships is essential to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
“The coaches were saying it takes five to seven days to acclimatise fully and we’ve had that,” McGree told socceroos.com.au
“I think that was very important, we’ll be ready and acclimatised to the weather.
“(This past week was spent) implementing the style of how we’re going to play both in attack and defence, what we’re going to come up against with these Asian teams."
While Arnold - who once again warned against the growing quality of AFC youth sides after the two friendlies - has lowered expectations for the group, McGree insists the Olyroos will maintain their attacking philosophy.
“We want to score as many goals as we can and concede as least as we can, and that’s just the main goal coming into this camp and converting that into the tournament," McGree said.
“What we’re going to have to do is try and create as many chances as we can and put (the opposition) away early and put as many goals past them in the match.”
