The Scottish Football Association endorsed the application this afternoon, before being passed by the UK Border Agency.

But the 28-year-old still needs to obtain a visa in Australia before making the journey to Scotland.

Manager Ally McCoist said earlier today he hoped the midfielder would be cleared in time to play in Sunday's Clydesdale Bank Premier League game against Motherwell.

However, it would now appear unlikely that McKay will be available for selection until next week's game against Aberdeen.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Rangers were successful today in gaining a work permit for Australian star Matt McKay but there is still some paperwork to be done before he can join up.

"The SFA endorsed Rangers' application and then it was passed by the UK Border Agency.

"However, the 28-year-old now needs to gain a visa in Australia before coming to Scotland.

"The Light Blues hope this process can be completed in the early part of next week and he can then travel to Scotland.

"Depending on when this takes place, McKay might be in a position to train with his new team-mates and stake a claim for inclusion in the squad for the Aberdeen game on August 28."

McKay secured his move to Rangers from Brisbane Roar last week after a fee was agreed by both clubs.

McKay spoke of his relief at resolving his work permit issues and finally landing a move to a British club.

He told Real Radio: "Waiting on a work permit was a worry but I'm very happy that the deal has gone through and I'm really looking forward to getting over there and getting some results.

"Not having a UK passport has killed a move to any UK club for a long time.

"Now that I've played some international games it has helped and I'm very grateful to get this work permit. It's very difficult and I'm glad it's come through."

McKay has already been given the lowdown on his new club by former Rangers players Craig Moore, Charlie Miller and Bob Malcolm, who also played for Brisbane Roar.

He added: "I learned a lot about Rangers and how big a club it is. They spoke about the professionalism involved and how many trophies they won.

"Those are the kind of things that interest me - winning games and winning titles - and I know I can do that at Rangers.

"I know Rangers are expected to win every week and I love winning games and I love being part of a successful side. The pressure will be great and I'll enjoy it."
