TELSTRA Dome officials defended the decision for Victory's clash with Queensland Roar to go ahead on a much-maligned surface but Ernie Merrick labelled the pitch 'totally unacceptable'.

Immediately after the game, Dome officials took the unusual step of issuing a press release defending the surface.
"We are grateful that both coaches ... were comfortable to proceed with the match," the Dome COO Michael Green said in a release.
On New Year's Eve, the Dome hosted a large dance party called Sensation with an estimated 40,000 punters partying the night away.
It left the surface patchy in part and with concerns over debris left on the surface before the Victory v Roar game just 48 hours later.
Before tonight's game, a number of workers were seen poring over the surface looking for any remnants of debris, including glass according to one A-League official.
However, Victory boss Ernie Merrick slammed the surface. "It was totally unacceptable," he said.
Roar coach Frank Farina revealed the game was "all but called off" until both coaches were consulted about the surface.
"Ernie said do we coaches get a say," explained Farina. "Both teams have to play on it and we said we'll play. So they [the Dome] said we'll play.
"It wasn't ideal but most stadiums now are mulit-use and there'll be instances like tonight. But it would've been worse if we hadn't played the game. That would've been scandalous.
"We can sit around and moan all we like but the reality it was not that bad."
Merrick said he would not like the vital game on Tuesday night against Adelaide United to be played at an alternate venue.
"I would like to play the game here on Tuesday. I'm sure the staff will do a fantastic job by Tuesday."
Victory defender Rody Vargas said that the public should feel let down by the quality of the surface.
"It was pretty difficult. I think the Melbourne public and the whole A-League deserve a better surface. We play in the best stadium in the country and to play on a pitch like that is unacceptable," he said.
