Barca clinched the crown - the 21st in their history - after gaining the point they needed against Levante tonight to ensure they could not be caught by second-placed Real Madrid.

Pep Guardiola`s men are now six points ahead of Madrid with two games remaining but they boast the better head-to-head record against the capital club this season, which is the deciding factor if the teams are level on points.

Speaking after the 1-1 draw at Levante, Messi said in Marca: "I`m very happy because it`s been a very tough title.

"It`s taken a lot of hard work to be champions and more so against a great rival like Real Madrid.

"Now we have to enjoy it," added the Argentinian, who hit the post in the second half but was not able to add to his 31 league goals this season - leaving him five behind Madrid`s Cristiano Ronaldo in race for the Pichichi award as top scorer.

Barca midfielder Xavi, who was celebrating his sixth league title with the club, added in AS: "It`s taken a lot of hard work and this team deserves a lot of credit. We need to congratulate everyone associated with Barcelona.

"The fans deserve it and I imagine that today we will celebrate with them in the streets."

Xavi becomes only the third Barca player to win six leagues, following in the footsteps of Antoni Ramallets (between 1947-1960) and current coach Guardiola (1990-1999), who both also won half-a-dozen championships with the Catalan outfit.

Barca captain Carles Puyol, who was not part of the match-day squad at the Cuitat de Valencia stadium this evening, now has five Primera Division winners' medals in his collection.

The Spain centre-back said: "I have to be calm but I`m very happy, it`s different when experience it from outside.

"I`ve been in the stands but I`m very pleased. We`ve worked very hard and today we`ve got the rewards. Now to celebrate it and rest a little to prepare for the final."

Barca, who lost the Copa del Rey final to Real Madrid, have the chance to add some more silverware this season as they face Manchester United in the Champions League final later this month.
