The 19-year-old Barcelona star, who has drawn constant comparisons to his legendary countryman ever since his arrival on the football stage, is opting not to get carried away with his achievements so far and claims he "will never reach" Maradona's status.

"Diego has been very kind with me," Messi told the World Soccer magazine. "He has always congratulated me and been flattered by my way of play. But nobody managed to do the things that he did with a ball.

"Although I am thankful for his support and confidence, I know that I never am going to reach his level. I will never reach Maradona because he is unique."

Speaking in the same interview, Messi also brushed aside talk of a split in the Barca camp between some of the players.

He said: "I have to laugh when I read stories in the media of disputes amongst the players.

"How would we be able to have achieved as much success as we have if we are not united?" questioned Messi, who scored twice in last week's 6-0 triumph over Atletico of Madrid.

Barcelona are currently second in the Primera Liga, behind leaders Real Madrid on head-to-head, as their bid for a 19th title looks set to go down to the wire.
