Argentina international Lionel Messi is determined to play at this summer's Olympic Games, even though it clashes with the start of Barcelona's Champions League campaign.
With Barca failing to claim a top-two finish in the Primera Liga they will now have to play in the Champions League qualifying rounds, which take place at the same time as the Olympic tournament in August.
However, Messi, who was part of a preliminary list named by Argentina coach Sergio Batista earlier this month, has his heart set on representing his country in Beijing and does not believe Barca will have a problem with that.
"It's up to me and the Olympic Games are something that I am not going to be able to play ever again," said Messi, who admits he has yet to officially speak to Barca.
"I think that they understand how I think and I don't feel they are going to have any conflict or problem with this," he added on Thursday.
"Team-mates with Argentina and Barca have told me that it is impressive to take part in the Olympic Games. It is an event to enjoy.
"It would be nice to return to Barcelona with the Olympic title."
The Olympic tournament is due to begin on August 6 with the final set for August 23.
The first leg of the third preliminary round is scheduled for the dates of August 12-13, which should mean Messi would be available for the return leg which is scheduled for August 26-27.
"We still don't know who we will play and Barcelona do not only depend on me to win games. I think that the fans are also going to understand," added Messi.
Argentina have been drawn against Ivory Coast, Australia and Serbia in Group A at the Olympics.
