The Victory skipper’s hopes of a quick recovery in time for tomorrow morning's clash against Les Bleus have been dashed.

It is more bad news for the Aussies who have already seen Brett Holman and Tom Rogic withdrawn from the squad ahead of the two friendlies.

Milligan arrived in Paris on the weekend with a pre-existing knee-injury and was assessed by Socceroos medical staff.

But after monitoring his condition over the first three days of camp it became apparent the 28-year-old would not be fit to face either France or Canada.

Socceroos Head Coach Holger Osieck decided Milligan should return to Australia on the next available flight to allow him to continue his injury rehabilitation at home.

No additional players will be added to the Socceroos squad.

Milligan, who was wearing a knee brace when he limped off during a recent pre-season friendly against Adelaide United, underwent scans and, last Friday, expressed hope of a quick recovery.

"It's something that I've been dealing with for a couple of weeks," he said at the time.

"Just got a little bit of an awkward knock on it. Tried running it out but (we're) leaning to the side of precaution with national team duties coming up and then coming back straight into the season.

"I think it's OK. I had scans this morning, just waiting to sit down with the doctor this afternoon. It was a normal challenge, I sort of landed funny on it. I tried to play a pass about 15 minutes later and had a bit more pain than I have had in it. More precautionary than anything."

Osieck, who is under pressure to keep his job after a 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Brazil last month, lost Al Nasr's Holman to a quadriceps strain during training with his club and Celtic’s Rogic to a groin injury.

The international friendly match against France will be played at the Parc de Princes, Paris on Friday 11 October 2013 (kick-off at 9:00pm CEST (6:00am AEDT, Saturday 12 October) and the match against Canada will be played at Craven Cottage, London on Tuesday 15 October at 8:00pm BST (6:00am AEDT, Wednesday 16 October).

Both matches will be broadcast live on FOX SPORTS.
