The Socceroos were brave but ultimately beaten in their tournament opener in Kazan.

A controversial penalty awarded by VAR, and converted by Antoine Griezmann, and a deflected goal from Paul Pogba was Australia's undoing.

The Socceroos hit back with a penalty scored by Mile Jedinak, but couldn't manage a second equaliser.

At the Kazan Arena Australia matched France for long periods and enjoyed 49% possession.

After the close loss, Milligan said: "I think it's been a while since a loss has hurt that much. It hurt so much because we put so much effort in, because they're such a good side. Individually, across the park and everywhere.

"There was so much made by you guys, by all the media, about how dangerous they are going forward. To be honest, we kept them to probably two or three half-chances. There's probably times we could be a bit more ruthless, and that's across the board, when we get the ball.

"That's one of our strengths. I think it's a good thing for us going forward. I think for today although it was a good performance, we've got a lot more to give."

Milligan, who started in central defence, praised the work of Mile Jedinak and Aaron Mooy in midfield.

"I think we were in the game for large parts," he said.

"We executed quite well defensively, and I talk about defensively throughout the team. I thought Mile and Mooysie were outstanding in shutting down those lanes into the front three, and that really gives 'Sains' and I chance to be aggressive when they do come through.

"Obviously there's things we can do better. But I think overall, to lose all three points is hard to take."
