Takuya Nozawa put the Japanese side ahead in this Group G encounter just before half-time before Shanghai skipper Du Wei saw red midway through the second period. Teenager Yuya Osako then made the points safe for the hosts in the 79th minute.

Kashima started well but it was Shanghai who had the best chance to go ahead in the 28th minute when Du headed towards goal but keeper Hitoshi Sogahata showed excellent reflexes to push the ball away.

The visitors were left to rue that miss when Kashima took the lead a minute before the break.

Mitsuo Ogasawara passed to Osako and the 18-year-old turned towards goal before feeding a pass to Nozawa down the left and he sent his shot over keeper Zhang Chen and into the back of the net.

Things got worse for Shanghai in the 68th minute when Du picked up a second caution for dissent to make their task even harder.

And the game was over as a contest 11 minutes later when Kashima doubled their lead as Marquinhos outmuscled Chen Lei down the left before cutting the ball back to Osako who then fired a left-foot effort into the roof of the net.

The dangerous Marquinhos continued to cause problems for Shanghai as he saw his shot denied by Zheng before substitute Chikashi Masuda sent a header wide.

Kashima pressed for a third and with two minutes remaining Atsuto Uchida passed across the box but Ryuta Sasaki sidefooted wide at the far post before the substitute created an opening for himself but Zhang parried his shot to safety.
