EXCLUSIVE: Mark Milligan is still deciding on a new club after his acrimonious split with Sydney FC, but sources say the inspirational Olyroo skipper is “100% committed” to playing abroad.
The 22-year-old star has spent the last month in his hometown Sydney and not overseas on trial, as some have suggested.
However, what is true is that Milligan split with his agent Craig Nettlebeck from Sydney’s Men’s Division about five weeks ago.
It’s believed he now has a new agent who is actively working to place the player with an overseas club.
Milligan’s split was around the same time the player failed to turn up for his club Sydney FC’s annual presentation night as well as the FFA awards.
A source close to the player told au.fourfourtwo.com today that Milligan will definitely not be playing in the A-League next season.
“There is a lot of going on behind the scenes right now. But Mark is keeping himself fit and he’s over his quad strain niggle," said the source.
"This is a very exciting year for him with the Olympics. He is 100% committed to going overseas though.
“As for what happened with Sydney FC, it wasn’t Mark’s intention to cause any sourness. Obviously the club was aware of overseas interest in him.
“A few things happened [at Sydney FC] that Mark wasn’t too happy with but he won't be speaking about that."
Sydney coach John Kosmina told au.fourfourtwo.com last month: “Mark’s made it very obvious in a discussion that I had with him that he wanted to leave.
“Well, not wanted to leave this club as such, but to try his luck overseas - so he goes with our blessing.”
It’s understood Milligan will join the Olyroos next month in camp and on their Malaysian tour.
The source added: “For Mark, the club he’ll choose will be the right one for him. If it’s a big club or a smaller one, it won’t matter. It will be the right club for him at this time in his career.”
