The former Sydney FC man has yet to be formally confirmed as Olympic skipper and coach Graham Arnold may opt for one of the over-age players instead.

Milligan was breathing a huge sigh of relief at North Sydney Oval today and insists he never took selection for granted.

He also knows that being part of the squad can only help his efforts to find a new club. Had he missed out, the process would have been altogether tougher.

Milligan told au.fourfourtwo.com: "Nothing has really been said (about the captaincy) but I'd love to wear the armband in Beijing. It would be an absolutely massive honour.

"It's been a long road to get to this point with 40 or so players used and it must have been extremely difficult for Graham Arnold to cut the squad down to 15 plus the three over-age players.

"It's been a nerve-wracking period for me. Nothing is ever guaranteed to you in football. But I've worked hard all the way through and this is the reward.

"I think you appreciate things more when you have to work for them.

"Not having a club and not playing regularly made things difficult. It's a great feeling to see my name on that list."

Milligan is impressed with the names on Arnold's list and has welcomed the inclusion of Jade North, Archie Thompson and David Carney as over-age players.

He said: "The boys Arnie has selected will contribute massively. I think they'll slot in and help us on and off the field."

Milligan admits his inclusion can only help his quest for a new club but he's confident a deal may not be too far away.

He said: "The Olympics is a massive shop window. I'm hoping to have things sorted before then but if they're not then I think it's the best place to be.

"I'm getting a lot of good feedback from the clubs I've visited and been in dialogue with. I'm quite confident something will come in the next few weeks.

"It (Olympic selection) puts my mind at rest. I can just focus on playing well. If it had gone the other way it could have been sticky.

"I'm not really fussy where I go in terms of a country. I am pretty fussy on the team. I don't want to go overseas for the sake of it. I want to go to a club that's going to be right for me, to a club where I can play and better myself.

"I need to be playing. I want to get back in that Socceroos set up."
