IN the wake of Gold Coast United’s 5-0 win over New Caledonia, Miron Bleiberg said he is happy with the progress his squad is making.
Four second half goals gave United a convincing victory, but Bleiberg told local and travelling media after the game that it was far from an easy match.
"It was a good game for us and I think overall the win was the result of superior fitness and organisation because they (New Caledonia) are quite a good side with a few good individual players," Bleiberg said.
"It was only one-nil at half time and if Jess (Vanstrattan) had not made one or two good saves we could have gone in at the break level.
"We talked at half-time about not playing too many square balls and looking for more penetration. In the second half we did that and it worked well for us.
"It was an improvement from how we played against North Queensland Fury last Tuesday, so we are heading in the right direction.
"The whole point of this trip was to get everyone together and have a tough game, so it's been a very good exercise."
With goalkeeper Jess Vanstrattan enjoying his first hit-out with his new club, Bleiberg reserved some praise for the former Juventus man who pulled off some excellent saves for his side.
"When you play for a club like Juventus, one of the top clubs in the world, you definitely have something because they can pick from almost anyone. There was a reason why he was our first signing and there was some evidence of that tonight.
"That's why you want a 'keeper like Jess in your team. When you're in trouble or someone in the opposing team produces a good effort on goal, he can save you. If not for him it could've been 1-1 at half-time," he said.
