Portland's Danny Mwanga scored both goals as the visitors jumped out to a 2-0 lead with less than half an hour to play but Wondolowski, top-scorer in Major League Soccer, rescued his side.

Just before half-time on Wednesday, Mwanga played a one-two with Rodney Wallace to put the Timbers ahead and 17 minutes after the break, the Congolese striker smashed home his second goal of the game after a strong run through the middle of the park by Frank Songo'o.

Down 2-0, San Jose desperately needed someone to step up and typically it was Wondolowski who got the job done, scoring his 20th goal of the season in the 73rd minute to start the home side's comeback.

Wondolowski skipped inside one defender to slot the ball across Portland goalkeeper Joseph Bendik and in the second minute of injury time, the 29-year-old striker nodded home to clinch a draw for San Jose.

In New York, Eastern Conference-leaders Sporting Kansas City struck twice in seven first-half minutes to knock off the Red Bulls 2-0.

Sporting's first goal came after Graham Zusi smashed a free-kick against the crossbar in the 12th minute and the rebound eventually fell to CJ Sapong, who turned and finished into the bottom corner.

Kei Kamara scored the visitors' second goal with a powerful header from a corner in the 19th minute and while New York had 62 percent of possession, Kansas City held on for the win.

In the other MLS match, the Columbus Crew defeated Chivas USA 1-0 thanks to an 89th-minute winner from Justin Meram.
