Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira has vacated the position after his contract with the World Cup hosts ended and the search to find his successor is already underway.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) announced over six months ago that the next coach will be a local, with Mosimane said to be the obvious choice after working in the Bafana Bafana set-up since 2006.

The former SuperSport United boss was expected by many to be unveiled as the coach earlier this week when SAFA called an urgent press conference in Johannesburg.

However, the country's football heads only revealed that Mosimane was their number one choice, saying his candidacy is still to be assessed by a special technical committee, who will report back their findings within 14 days.

Mokoena, though, wants to see the 45-year-old appointed.

"We need a person within the structure and within the foundation to build from this foundation," he told BBC's Sportsworld programme. "And Pitso, he sacrificed a lot to be where he is.

"He did well in the PSL (Premier Soccer League), he went abroad to get his qualifications and he sacrificed his manager position to be an assistant manager for four years.

"So why can't we just give him a chance? I'm sure he will do well, off course we have to help him to help us, but I'm sure his appointment will make a difference to South African football.

"Absolutely (he is a person I can work with). I worked with him for years and I know exactly what type of a manager he is and I'm looking forward to working with him."
