City downed crosstown rival Melbourne Victory 3-0 on Sunday, but it took over an hour for the winners to open the scoring.

Montemurro elected to play recognised left-back Steph Catley on the right surging forward who managed to score the second while striker Marianna Tabain drifted off to the left.

The championship coach lauded the versatility of his side and said the ability to rotate his team was due to the departures of key players including Jen Beattie (Manchester City), Kim Little (Arsenal) and Lisa De Vanna (unattached).

“We’re a different team, different unit, with probably a lot more balance with players we don’t have anymore,” Montemurro said.

“Standout match winners like we did last year… how do you replace a player like Kim Little? it’s very difficult, so we’ve become more structured, more strategic in what we’re trying to do and we just feel we’re very well balanced.”

The 3-0 romping comes after the side's new W-League facility was unveiled on Thursday.

City now look to take on Brisbane Roar in a top of the table clash away next week.

“It’s been a great week, a great unveiling of where we’re going for women’s football and league football,” he said.

“We want to get better and better and I was very pleased with the performance, we controlled major parts of the game (against Victory).

“I think it’s just fantastic just stepped up, there’s a lot of good internationals floating around, a lot of good teams have started a lot earlier and we can see standard have gotten better.”

American signing Beverly Yanez arrives to City this week after finishing the 2016 NWSL season with Seattle Reign with Jess Fishlock and Lauren Barnes.
