SOCCEROO Craig Moore has angrily blasted lies that he was sacked by Greek club Kavala and branded them "absolute nonsense".
The World Game website yesterday claimed the former Brisbane Roar and Socceroos skipper had been axed by the Greek club for an "off-field incident".
Today though Moore arrived back in Australia to furiously deny the claim and said he came back home for a rest after his club's season was effectively over.
Moore was backed up by his Kavala coach who sang Moore's praises overnight and said he was the best player in the team.
"You can imagine my surprise when I get back home and hear these sorts of stories," Moore told foxsports.com.au.
"I spoke with the coach, Aad de Mos, and he's come out and said it's a lot of nonsense. I spoke with Pim Verbeek on Sunday; I've gone through all the right channels to let everyone know my thoughts.
"As far as the sacking goes, that's absolute nonsense. It was my decision to come home.
"I didn't take my wages for all of March, and I decided it was the right time to come home and get the rest I needed, which I otherwise wouldn't have got, before the World Cup."
Moore is now focusing on preparing for South Africa and hopes to find a way around red tape that will allow him to play in the state league between now and June.
"I captained the side on Sunday," said Moore. "We got beat 3-1 and I scored the penalty.
"After the game, there's two games left in the season and really they were dead rubbers with no chance of qualifying for Europe.
"My first 10 or 12 games, I was extremely happy with my form.I played really well but I played a lot of games.
"I played the last 15 games on the bounce in a 2½-month spell and basically my body was at a stage that I felt I needed a rest.
"I'm not 24 any more. I'm 34. The last two or three games were tough going, and I was starting to get to the stage where, physically, I felt as if I needed the rest. I was carrying a few little niggles into games.
"I had to get back to Australia and get some body maintenance to freshen up for the World Cup."
