Socceroos English Premier League star Aaron Mooy has admitted that being benched for last night’s World Cup qualifier against Syria made him angry.
Before last night’s crucial qualifier, Australian national team boss Ange Postecoglou again shocked fans and players with his tactics and line up against Syria.
Mooy, one of Australia’s best performers at club level with EPL side Huddersfield was left out of the Socceroos starting line-up and revealed the decision to leave him on the bench upset him.
“You’ve just got to get on with it, I don’t make the decisions,” Mooy said after the game.
“I have to try my best when I play. Of course I was angry, I wasn’t playing but every player should be angry if they’re not.”
The fall-out from the Australia’s 2-1 extra-time victory over Syria could see Postecoglou make a shock decision to quit the Socceroos even if they qualify for Russia 2018 as reported the Herald Sun today.
Sick of the constant attacks from critics concerning his tactics and squad selections, Postecouglou has seemingly had enough of having his decisions questioned.
Speaking at the press conference after the win, Postecoglou again had to defend his tactics and line-up, particularly his decision to drop Mooy.
“We wanted to be a little more aggressive in attack and Aaron was the one that missed out,” he said.
“It’s not the first time he’s missed out and it won’t be the last he’s missed out, we’ve done that before.
“We really wanted to be aggressive and attacking and we didn’t want to field those wide players with too much of a defensive a player and we thought Smith with his speed could give us something forward.”
However, the decision to include Smith backfired when the Bournemouth left back came off with an injury early and with Mooy coming on the field as a replacement it gave him a chance to prove Postecoglou wrong.
“Once the game got started it was just like any other game, I was motivated and I wanted to win like every other player on the team,” he said.
With Smith coming off, the Socceroos formation became 3-5-1 with Tom Rogic, James Troisi and Mooy in the centre of midfield, and the 27 year-old revealed the tactics were completely foreign to him.
“I have never seen it either,” he said. “It’s the boss’s ideas and we all believe in it and go with it.
“The formation was a bit different today I had never played it before, there were three number 10’s and one sitter (in defensive midfield) I came on in the number 10 position and I tried my best.”
