Mooy helped the West Yorkshire club achieve promotion via the playoffs last season after joining them on loan from Manchester City.

Now the Sydney-born central midfielder will call Huddersfield his home, at least for the next three years.

The fee, believed to be worth $20 million, beats the previous record held by both Mark Viduka (from Celtic to Leeds United) and Brad Smith (from Liverpool to Bournemouth) worth $10.5m.

Australian football fans will have even more reason to follow the English Premier League come the start of the new season in August, with Mooy joining Brighton & Hove Albion's new signing Mat Ryan in the top flight.

Mooy had interest from several Premier League clubs and explained why Huddersfield Town was the outstanding choice for his next career move.

"Playing for Huddersfield has been a fantastic experience this year and thanks to the fans, David (Wagner), the owner Dean and all the team, I’ve grown to feel part of the Terriers family," Mooy said.

"Now we’re in the Premier League, not only do I get to play at the highest level of football, but I continue to be part of a team that achieved something special and we will continue on that journey together to try and achieve much more.

"I can’t wait to play in front of the Huddersfield fans again next season.

“I’d like to thank my former club, Manchester City, for the support throughout my time in the Championship and during my transition to Huddersfield.”

Mooy's first EPL game for Huddersfield will be away to Crystal Palace on 13 August.
