Socceroo and Huddersfield star Aaron Mooy believes former club Melbourne City can contend for the Championship this season.
Mooy left Melbourne City for parent club Manchester City at the end of June and immediately went on loan to Huddersfield.
Meanwhile his former A-League club narrowly missed out on the Premiers Plate with two weeks remaining in the 2015/16 season, eventually finishing fourth, and losing in the semi-final to Adelaide 4-1.
Since Mooy’s departure the club has arguably made the biggest capture in A-League history, acquiring the services of Tim Cahill from Hangzhou Greentown.
City have also signed experienced names Luke Brattan (Manchester City loan), Neil Kilkenny (Preston North End), Fernando Brandan (Atletico Temperley) and Bruce Kamau (Adelaide United).
“I still follow what’s happening in Australia, the squad looks pretty strong, I think it’s decent and they’re going to be a good team,” Mooy said.
“I’m just waiting for the A-League to start to see how they go, I’m sure they’ll do very well.
“Tim is a great capture, I don’t really need to say much about it. Everyone knows all about him. It’s a big signing for not just Melbourne, but the A-League and I’m sure he’ll do his thing and bring in some more fans.”
The 25-year-old left Melbourne at the end of June and prioritised settling in early to make the transition as comfortable as possible.
Mooy has made five starts for Huddersfield so far in the Championship this season and has won the hearts of The Terriers fans with dominating performances.
Huddersfield is currently first on the Championship table with four wins and one draw approaching Week 6 of season 2016/17.
“The fans have been good, they’re very positive about me so far, hopefully that continues because it makes it a bit easier,” he said.
“I’m happy we’re winning and I’m playing, I’m happy with how I’m going but I can always play better than what I’m producing.
“I’m happy with how the starts went. I’ve settled in and looking to build on it and just by the end of it, become the best player I can be.
“The family got settled pretty quickly. I got there quite early into the pre-season and that’s another advantage to get there early, do the full pre-season and to get to know everyone.
“Get the house sorted, family settled in before the season starts, so that was one of the good things about going to Huddersfield, to get the early start.”
Mooy impressed in the 2-0 win against Iraq to begin the final phase of 2018 World Cup qualification and was lauded by coach Ange Postecoglou after the match.
The midfielder nearly got onto the scoresheet when he hit the crossbar in the second half.
The playmaker still remains in Socceroos camp for the upcoming match against UAE in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday (1.30am AEST).
Mooy was pleased with the performance, however, he indicated they rushed at times and said there was no room for complacency after the UAE defeated Japan 2-1 away from home on Thursday.
“It was a good start," he added.
"We won, but they made it difficult, they sat in and when we came out they followed us, so it was difficult to break them down at the start.
“We just kept at it and it wore them down eventually and we took our chances, so perfect.
“We were trying to create holes so we could slip in between, it was very tight and maybe we got a little bit impatient.
“We needed to keep the ball a bit more and make them run, when the gaps open then we can play through and maybe we forced it a bit.
“All the games will be difficult, everyone’s fighting for the one thing and it’s to go to the World Cup. It doesn’t matter who you play, it’s going to be a tough match against UAE as tonight showed.”
