The 20-year-old Australian midfielder left Wanderers in the European summer in search of regular first-team football after spending the past few seasons in Bolton's reserves side.

Mooy had trialled on the continent over the past few months but recently found his way to Scotland.

And St Mirren officials exclusively told au.fourfourtwo.com he had impressed enough to be offered a deal by the club after a decent performance in last Thursday's bounce game against Morton.

But it is understood Bolton hold Mooy's compensation rights meaning negotiations will be ongoing between the two clubs and no deal can yet be finalised.

Mooy had been joined on trial at St Mirren by fellow Aussie Manny Giannaros but the club revealed they would not be following up interest in the former Central Coast Mariners youth defender.

St Mirren boss Danny Lennon told the Paisley Express Giannaros was naturally disappointed.

"I wasn't convinced that Manny could offer us anything different, so I've decided that's that," he said.

"I told the player after the Morton match. He was disappointed but I wouldn't expect him to be anything else."

It is understood Giannaros is heading back to Australia.
