After his sensational performance as a substitute in the 1-1 draw against Denmark, former Socceroo Peter Katholos has called for Daniel Arzani to start against Peru.
Coming on in the 71st minute, the Australian wonder kid put on a dazzling display that almost won the game for the Socceroos against the Danes.
With Australia attacking, the teenager had an instant impact, creating two great chances for his teammates and almost scoring the winner in the 90th minute.
Early on Australia was on the backfoot when Denmark took the lead in the seventh minute, after Christian Eriksen scored a rasping half-volley that went past Mat Ryan.
Australia equalised in the 37th minute when Socceroos captain Mile Jedinak stared down Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who failed in his attempts to put off the Australian captain off.
In the end Australia drew 1-1 against the European powerhouse who are ranked 11th in the world and still have a chance of making the knockout stages of the 2018 World Cup
But Katholos feels Arzani should have been given more minutes and the Socceroos’ should have got more out of the game
"We had to go for a win," Katholos said.
"It’s going to make it a little bit hard in the last game because we need to beat Peru and France need to beat Denmark.
“We don’t want to criticise the coach but we wanted to the win the game.
“When you got players like Arzani on the bench and he can make things happen and he can create you don’t put them on the bench. That is wrong. The whole of Australia can see that.’
Katholos has known Arzani since he was 12 and was left wondering what could have been.
"As former players you watch kids nurture and when they come on the scene you are excited and the whole of Australia is excited," he said.
"I’ve been saying that he’s been ready for six months. It’s nothing personal but when you analyse it Arzani has the ability.
"We want Australia to win and he’s proven today in just 20 mins that he created more than other players have done in two games.”
Denmark v Australia player ratings
Meanwhile Australia’s coach from the 1974 World Cup in Germany, Rale Rasic, hailed the Socceroos performance against the Danes.
"We absolutely dominated Denmark,” he said.
“In the second half there was only one team on the field and that was Australia. If we had a bit more better finish, we would have ended the second half with two goals.
"When young Arzani came on he played very well and he took the man on. Mathew Leckie and Tom Rogic and all the team must feel very proud of their performance.”
Ahead of the Australia’s final group game against Peru Rasic wants more of the same against the South Americans.
“If we are physically committed the way we did tonight, we will outplay Peru,” he said.
‘We were technically better than Denmark. Denmark played only long balls. They never expressed one move through individual football.
“I’ve heard a a few commentators make comments about van Marwijk and that we should be more adventurous, but ’m 100% behind van Marwijk’s tactics, they are absolutely spot on.
“I have absolute admiration for what he has done in such a short period of time.“
