Coentrao is being tracked by some of Europe's biggest clubs and Mourinho has expressed his keenness to bring the left-sided Portugal international to the Bernabeu this summer.

He told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser: "He is a great player. I like him for his versatility, playing in all positions. Players like him are always welcome, and more so at a club as demanding as Madrid."

Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern Munich have also been linked with the 23-year-old, but he may be tempted by the chance to link up with compatriots Mourinho, Pepe, Ricardo Carvalho and Cristiano Ronaldo in the Spanish capital.

Mourinho also announced his intention to keep strikers Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain, describing both players as "non-transferable" and believes his squad - strengthened already by the capture of Turkish playmaker Nuri Sahin from Borussia Dortmund and utility man Hamit Altintop from Bayern Munich- is shaping up well.

"Sahin was the best in the Bundesliga, a competition that is growing," he added.

"He is another kid with a great future, like (Mesut) Ozil, Marcelo, (Angel) Di Maria, Benzema ... We are a young team and this Real Madrid, within three or four years may mark a new era in European football."

Mourinho defended his decision to appeal against a five-match Champions League ban imposed on him by UEFA for comments about Barcelona at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The Portuguese claimed in the wake of his side's Champions League semi-final first leg defeat to Barca at the Bernabeu that the Catalan side benefited from favourable refereeing decisions.

"I have been punished without knowing why," he said.

"My case is unique and will go to CAS. I have a right to defend myself."
