Salgado, capped 60 times by Spain, spent a decade at the Bernabeu, playing more than 250 times before being released and moving to Rovers in August 2009.

The 35-year-old is all too aware of the expectations at Real Madrid, who have had a disappointing European record since winning the title in 2000 and 2002.

Under former Chelsea boss Mourinho, who guided Inter Milan to Champions League success last season, Real finally made it past the last 16 for the first time in seven years, and will tomorrow night host Tottenham in the first leg of their quarter-final.

And Salgado reckons the Spanish giants will not accept anything other than the Portuguese coach leading the team to glory at Wembley in May.

"Real only have the Champions League and Copa del Rey left - and the Copa del Rey is not enough for Real Madrid," said Salgado, with Real some eight points adrift of La Liga leaders Barcelona after losing their first home game in 25 matches when beaten by 1-0 Sporting Gijon at the weekend.

"The fans know Madrid have spent a lot of money in the last few years.

"Madrid need to win a title. They signed Mourinho just for that.

"They did not sign him for his style - it was to win the Champions League. If he does not do that, he will be a failure to Real Madrid.

"But first of all they have to beat Tottenham and that will not be easy."

Tottenham have proved the surprise package of this year's European competition, winning their group ahead of Inter and then knocking out AC Milan in the last 16.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Harry Redknapp's side have a "50-50" chance of adding Real to their impressive list of scalps.

Salgado is in no doubt Spurs will offer Real a significant test of their European credentials.

"Madrid got through to the quarter-finals after a long time and against a weak team - Lyon are not the team they used to be, so I think Tottenham is a challenge for Real Madrid," Salgado said.

"If you ask me about the chances for Tottenham, it depends on what happens in the first leg. It is massive. It is also important that [Aaron] Lennon and [Gareth] Bale are fit.

"If Tottenham get a draw in the first leg, it will be good for them, because the atmosphere at White Hart Lane will be fantastic.

"If they get the result, it will be very tough for Real Madrid to beat them."
