EVERTON boss David Moyes insists Socceroo Tim Cahill remains a key member of the squad despite rumours of his demise after an underwhelming 2011-12 season.
The 32-year-old Australian midfielder has only managed three goals for the Toffees during this campaign, prompting some critics to predict his demise and claim he's surplus to requirements at Goodison Park due to his form and age.
Cahill has battled for Everton ever since returning from the 2011 Asian Cup with a foot injury and given his lack of goals hasn't been an automatic starter for Moyes this term.
However Moyes told The Liverpool Post late this week that Cahill had at least a few years left in him at the club yet, particularly given his improvement in form since the arrivals of Nikica Jelavic and Steven Pienaar in January.
“There's been a couple of games where we've been able to change and rest him because we've had a fully fit squad,” Moyes said.
“But Tim’s been the mainstay of the way we’ve played. There’ll be a time when we have to move on and that will evolve, but not at the moment.
“He’s still got a few years left on his contract and he’ll still be a big part of what we do. He’s fit, he’s athletic, he can do several jobs for us.”
He added: “I don't think we would have been in a position to make a massive overhaul. And we've got players who are getting older so we've got to be replacing from underneath and bringing in some younger legs as well.
“But we also need players who can go into the team so to get that balance right is where it would probably cost a lot of money.”
Meanwhile, Cahill reiterated his desire to help Everton finish above rivals Liverpool in the Premier League table this term.
The Toffees are currently seventh, three points ahead of the eighth-placed Reds.
“To finish above Liverpool we have to be really determined and try to get the right results,” Cahill said.
“We have to be on song because it's such a massive thing to finish above Liverpool and I think for the fans it would be a just reward for what we've been through this season.”
