DAVID Moyes returned from Everton's Europa League qualifying success against Sigma Olomouc in the Czech Republic heartened by several aspects of his team's performance.
Everton, at home to out-of-form Wigan in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday, were congratulated by their manager for a "job well done" in a 1-1 draw - and consequent 5-1 aggregate victory - despite the seventh-minute sending-off of Tony Hibbert.
Steven Pienaar's goal and the return of Aiyegbeni Yakubu as a late substitute as he comes back from nine months out with an Achilles injury were two particularly pleasing points for Moyes, whose side will learn their group opponents today, following the draw in Monaco.
"We knew we were going to be under pressure, because they had to score," Moyes said.
Full-back Hibbert was sent off for bringing down Jakub Petr.
But Pienaar scored shortly before half-time - and despite substitute Pavel Sultes' equaliser for the Czechs, Moyes' men were in control.
The manager was therefore able to introduce Nigerian forward Yakubu and said afterwards: "He played really well and showed us what he is capable of.
"He has not yet made a full recovery - he will need a little more time."
Of South African Pienaar, the manager added: "He really needs to score more often - but he scored an important goal in this match."
Moyes had reservations about the circumstances of Hibbert's dismissal but was satisfied with his team.
"It was a job well done," the Toffees boss told evertonTV.
"I am pleased we got through - it was important for us. I thought we got better as the game went on.
"They put us under pressure, but thankfully we defended well enough and got one ourselves."
Replays suggested Hibbert might have got the ball when he was judged to have committed the foul - and also that more defenders might have been covering to prevent Petr getting a shot on goal.
"It was disappointing to see Tony get sent off, and that affected us," Moyes added.
"I thought it was a wee bit harsh; I have seen them given (in similar situations) and seen them not.
"But in Europe, if you misplace passes you will put your defenders in trouble - and you will probably end up making rash tackles, which will be punished."
