Everton manager David Moyes believes Tim Cahill should be fit for tomorrow's 216th Merseyside derby with Liverpool at Goodison Park.
Cahill sustained severe bruising to his shin after seemingly being stamped on by Vincent Kompany during the 2-0 defeat by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last weekend.
After simply doing light jogging yesterday, according to Moyes, Cahill has trained more seriously on Friday, with the Scot hopeful he will be okay pending a late check on Saturday.
“Tim trained today so we hope he will be okay,” the Everton boss said at his pre-match press conference on Friday. “We will assess it tomorrow but hopefully he will be fine.
“He had lots of bad bruising. It was really bad at the start of the week and he was only able to do a bit of jogging yesterday and (train) a little bit this morning.
“We wouldn’t ever put anybody in half-fit no matter what game it is, and we will need to make sure he is fully fit before we decide to play him.
Moyes added: “He is someone who, since he came to the Club, has scored important goals – not just in games like this – but in other games as well.
“He is lacking a little bit in his goals at the moment but hopefully they are yet to come. He has always been very good for us and epitomises our spirit and what we do here.
“He has been one of the best things to happen to me and Everton in nine or 10 years and he is due a goal, so I am hoping if he makes it he will come up with the goods."
