EVERTON manager David Moyes believes some of the gloss has been taken off the FA Cup in recent years but that does not mean he has less of an interest in winning it.
The Toffees have not lifted a trophy since their 1995 FA Cup victory over Manchester United and on Sunday they face Merseyside rivals Liverpool, themselves a successful cup side, at Anfield for the second time within a week.
Moyes would like nothing better than dumping out their near-neighbours and continuing that run all the way to Wembley.
"I don't think it is the same cup as everyone knew," said Moyes.
"The draw is not on the same day as we wanted it on and they play semi-finals at Wembley, which no-one wants.
"Overall I think there is a general lack of respect for the FA now - not for their cup competition but generally for the FA.
"But I'm looking forward to being in the cup and hopefully getting through.
"I would like to win the cup but there is big obstacle in front of us and we need to get over it before we can talk about winning the cup."
Everton snatched a late 1-1 draw in their Barclays Premier League encounter at Anfield thanks to Tim Cahill's header on Monday.
However, the Toffees boss does not believe that will have any effect on Sunday's encounter, especially as Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez could send out a completely different side.
"I think the cup games are always big games, no matter when you play them or who you play against," he said.
"Obviously when it is a derby it adds even more spice to it. I don't think either of the clubs would have wanted the draw when it came out but we are looking forward to it.
"We will go there and try to beat them. We think we can play better than we did in midweek.
"I don't think it (Cahill's late goal) gives any advantage. It is a different game completely for both of us.
"We are concentrating on getting through in the cup. It is something we would like to do and we are going to go there to see if we can try to make it happen."
Moyes, whose side has been operating without a recognised striker for the last few weeks because of injury, is likely to name the same squad plus defender Joseph Yobo, who has missed four matches with a hamstring injury.
That is in contrast to his Liverpool counterpart, who has the resources to be able to make numerous changes and could field a side weaker than the one which contested the Premier League match.
"I think Rafa will have a big decision because he has a lot of players to pick from and when you have lots of players it causes you problems because you have to give them games," Moyes added.
"You have to keep them happy. We don't have that situation so we will be going there hoping to do a better job than we did in the last one."
On the prospect of facing a Liverpool side not at full strength Moyes said: "We played Blackburn earlier in the league cup and they put out a weakened team and beat us so that doesn't go for anything at all.
"My concentration is solely on Everton. We were pleased with the way the game went [on Monday], we got what we deserved and if we can play better we can come away with a victory.
"You don't know what the opposition are going to do but hopefully what we do is more important than what Liverpool do."
