DAVID Moyes was "bitterly disappointed" as Everton's failure to defeat 10-man Newcastle was compounded by an injury to midfielder Mikel Arteta at St James' Park.
With the game only three minutes old, Arteta challenged Peter Lovenkrands and landed awkwardly, grasping his knee in agony.
"Losing Mikel is probably the biggest blow of it all," Moyes told Sky Sports 1.
"We played for nearly an hour against 10 men and created hardly any chances.
"A draw's not a bad result, but I think in the circumstances we're disappointed not to take all three and bitterly disappointed because of the injury to Mikel."
Arteta was understood to be returning to Liverpool for a scan.
"I am concerned," added Moyes. "The news I'm getting at the moment isn't great news.
"The early look at him wasn't good, but I'd rather wait to see."
Magpies midfielder Kevin Nolan was sent off for a dreadful 43rd-minute challenge on Victor Anichebe, but Newcastle held on.
Moyes agreed it was a deserved dismissal.
"It was a sending off, there's no doubt about that," he added.
"I don't think Kevin Nolan's that type of player but it was a bad tackle and it was definitely a sending off."
Chris Hughton, who is in temporary charge, was relieved with the performance as Newcastle limited the Toffees' chances despite their numerical disadvantage.
"For us I think to go down to 10 men at the time that we did, to come through the 90 minutes with Everton having limited good opportunities at our goal is testament to our lads," Hughton told Sky Sports 1.
Hughton reiterated Moyes' view that Nolan's tackle was not intentionally dangerous.
"He's very apologetic," he added. "He's an honest professional. We accept it wasn't the best of challenges but my first impression was poorly timed, not malicious.
"Kevin has apologised to David (Moyes) and to the lad in their team (Anichebe).
Midfielder Nicky Butt said Newcastle's chances of victory were ended by Nolan's sending off.
"It's very difficult and frustrating," he told Sky Sports 1.
"We wanted to put a performance in today and try and get a result. But when Kev (Nolan) was sent off it's about trying not to concede and hoping to try and get a goal from a set piece.
"It was not to be and a point with 10 men is a good result for us."
