ROAR'S Matt Mundy might have been thrown into the deep end in Melbourne, but the fishing fanatic is hopeful for more when Wellington Phoenix come to Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.
A late injury to Josh McCloughan forced the 22-year-old into an unfamiliar role in the starting line-up as Brisbane Roar played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with the defending champions.
But, despite performing well in difficult circumstances, Mundy remains his harshest critic, declaring the memorable match one he would rather forget.
"I don't think I had the best game," the former Rochedale Rovers defender said. "It wasn't ideal but still you've got to know when to switch on. I still don't think I'm in very good form and I haven't been training as well as I'd like.
"I think there's a lot of improvement to be made but it's something to build on."
In normal circumstances a draw in Melbourne would be considered a prize catch, but Mundy said the team remained disappointed with the two points that got away.
"They're a very tough team," he said. "It's probably a good result for down there but with a 3-1 lead, no one wants to draw when you're 3-1 up so it was a bit disappointing.
"Fingers crossed we can get the three points against (Wellington) and get our first win on the board."
A natural centre back, Mundy said he was still coming to grips the wider role, but remains happy to play wherever required if it means game time in his debut season in the first team.
"Everyone wants to be in the starting team and even in the squad," he said. "I've just got to work hard and try my best.
"I'm not too familiar with the right and left back role so I need to understand how to play that role a bit better.
"I've just got to learn to get the positioning right and then hopefully the rest will come and I can start going forward, because now I'm a bit nervous to go forward.
"All the boys are good. They're helping me out with positioning and stuff like that so it makes it a bit easier."
In an experimental back four that includes Luke DeVere on the right of defence, Mundy said the experience of Craig Moore and Bob Malcolm was crucial.
He added: "Craig and Bob talk a lot so it's not too bad. I don't think the new faces make too much of a difference."
