Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat believes Jason Geria needs improvement if he is to earn a Socceroos call-up from Ange Postecoglou.
Geria holds one cap and extended his contract with Victory for three more years on Wednesday.
The Socceroos right-back position is still up for grabs with Perth Glory’s Josh Risdon and Melbourne City’s Ivan Franjic knocking on the door.
Muscat said last week's discussions regarding the national team should be taken seriously. He felt Geria needed to build consistency before he could be a genuine contender for Australia.
“Young players, people especially in this country are guilty of it – building individuals up and touting them for national team selection,” Muscat said.
“He’s made a good solid decision and he wants to be the best player in his position in this competition and then when he does get to that he won’t be asking to get into the national team.

“He’s got to get that consistent form and he started the season off OK and he’s in a very good place at the moment.”
Muscat was also pleased with Geria’s re-signing and believed he made the right call.
“I’d like to think some of the reasons Jason wants to remain here is that he thinks he’s in a good environment,” he said.
“I’ve spoken to him and he believes he’s got a lot of improvement in him and he believes he’s in an environment where we can help him achieve that.
“At the same time, we’ve made it quite clearly a few years back we want him to remain at the club and I think we’re fortunate he’s committed.”
Victory lock horns with Brisbane Roar at AAMI Park on Friday night.
