Postecoglou was unveiled as the new Socceroos coach by Football Federation Australia yesterday but will still take charge of Victory’s blockbuster against Roar at Etihad Stadium. 

Despite the 48-year-old admitting the timing of the Socceroos job coming up was unfortunate, he believes whoever takes over will be able to complete his unfinished business.

“I think everyone agrees that the timing is terrible, but at the same time the opportunity to coach a national team is for me a once in a lifetime opportunity and one I couldn’t turn down,” said Postecoglou.

“There’s no doubt I would have loved to finish the job I’ve started but I really still firmly believe the job will be finished regardless.

“This was never built as a one man show and never has, everywhere I’ve gone I’ve never done that.

“I’ve always made sure there are quality people working with me and those quality people will remain and certainly the quality of the squad we’ve got I’m still confident the job will be finished.”

Victory assistant coach Kevin Muscat is tipped to take over as interim coach until the end of the season and possibly beyond and Postecoglou believes he is well equipped to fill his shoes.

“I want to be careful about what I say because obviously that’s a club decision and it’s not my say,” said Postecoglou.

“As an observer and someone who has worked with him I think he’s an outstanding candidate to take over the job and I think he can do it. 

“He’s done his apprenticeship and he’s worked very, very hard these past 18 months. 

“He’s been a big part of what’s happened these last 18 months and I’ve thrown a lot of responsibility on him but he’s welcomed that. He’s an outstanding candidate for the role and I’ve got no doubt he’ll do a great job. 

“We’ve spoken a lot about young players and regeneration these past few days and it’s the same with coaches. At some point you’ve got to throw them in there and give them an opportunity. 

“I’ve got no doubt that if Kevin is given the opportunity he’ll do a great job.”

However, Postecoglou ruled out poaching Muscat for an assistant role with the Socceroos. 

“I don’t think that’s his journey,” said Postecoglou. “When I’ve moved around I haven’t taken too many people with me and I think it would be unfair on this football club if I disrupted it any further than me leaving.

“The club’s been very gracious in allowing me to move on even though I’m contracted and I respect that. I certainly wouldn’t do anything further to hamper their chances or disrupt them. 

“I’ll still pick their players for the national team and they can complain about that like I used to.”
