Muscat was unveiled as the new head-coach of Victory on Thursday morning on a deal that stretches to the end of the 2014-15 campaign. 
 
The 40-year-old has served his apprenticeship under Mehmet Durakovic, Jim Magilton and most recently Ange Postecoglou with the club putting faith in their former captain to take the club forward. 
 
“Over the past three weeks the challenges that we’ve had have been well documented but through adversity comes opportunity and often leaders emerge to guide the ship forward,” said Victory chairman Anthony di Pietro.  “Kevin is that person. 
 
“We believe he is a great leader and he has served a worthy coaching apprenticeship, much of that has been served under the greatest coach in the land. 
 
“We’ve got great faith in Kevin and wish him well.”
 
Muscat admits he knows the extent of the challenge ahead of him and knows exactly what is expected.
 
“I’ve been at the club 10 years now and I’m well aware of the beast I’m about to try and ride,” said Muscat.
 
“I understand it’s a great challenge but I’ve been here long enough to realise what’s expected at this football club and I dare say that I’m going to try and achieve that.
 
“The first time I sat down with the chairman and the CEO was about making sure the football club appoints the best person for the job. 
 
“When I realised that both our visions aligned, I was under no illusion that I was the right man to take the club forward. "
 
Muscat is a club legend after captaining the side in its inaugural season and taking it to two Premierships and Championships as a player.
 
Upon retiring after the 2010-11 season, Muscat took over as the club's assistant coach, but has endured a rollercoaster ride since. 
 
The club initially struggled to replace Ernie Merrick but Ange Postecoglou, Paul Trimboli and Muscat have spent the past 18 months turning the side into serious title challengers once again.
 
With Postecoglou taking over the Socceroos job, Muscat believes it was finally his time to step up to the top job.
 
“I’ve been asked a couple of times throughout my time at the football club whether I was ready to take on the mantle and I can say that I honestly answered no,” said Muscat. 
 
“When the question was poised to me this time, and with the national team job becoming available, I knew the first person that they’d turn to would be Ange.
 
“So when I asked myself that question one more time, the answer was yes. 
 
“I believe I’ve got the tools to take this football club and this football team forward and I’m looking forward to it.”
 
Muscat’s assistant will be highly-rated youth coach Darren Davies, who has been working heavily with the senior team under Postecoglou.
 
Former Newcastle Jets and Wellington Phoenix striker Vaughan Coveny will take over the reigns of the Youth side, with Davies expected to still remain heavily involved. 
 
Muscat’s first game in charge will be against his former boss Ernie Merrick’s Wellington Phoenix on Monday night at Etihad Stadium.
