Victory arrived back in Melbourne on Thursday afternoon after they fell 4-1 away to Shanghai SIPG in the Asian Champions League (ACL) on Tuesday night.

They now focus their attention on fourth-placed United on Saturday where they have the chance to surpass the Reds at home.

Victory’s 3-0 away triumph to Western Sydney Wanderers on January 19 was the club’s last win and Muscat endured the jeers from the home supporters in their 2-1 loss to Brisbane at home a fortnight ago.

Chairman Anthony Di Pietro said at a function in early February “I stand here and I offer no excuses, it’s not good enough and it’s not acceptable by anyone at this football club”.

And the Victory boss said his focus was just on the Reds.

“At this point in time, it sounds like our season's over, doesn’t it? With all the commentary and talk this morning?” Muscat said ironically.

“Nothing really (to say about Di Pietro’s comments), they don’t make me nervous. I’m getting on with my responsibilities and my job.

“There’s still seven games to go and you never know, we could be fourth by 9pm tomorrow night."

Muscat also had a message for the supporters, who are beginning to lose patience with the cub legend.

“I think the reality is we can all understand (how they feel), well I certainly do anyway, because we’re not overly satisfied with our performances for the entirety of games,” he said.

“We maybe looked and thought we could be in a better positon at the start of the season than we are now.

"The reality is we are where we are. For whatever reasons or facts, there are a lot of facts associated and attached to it as well…

"By all accounts, there’s going to be a decent crowd here tomorrow night. What I will say is the players need our fans to support them and get behind them.

"Ultimately the flip side to that is the fans need the players to go out and put on a performance to make their members and fans happy, that’s what we’re going to be trying to do tomorrow night.”

The Victory boss also defended the comments he's made after games in which they have failed to perform for the full 90 minutes.

Muscat has seemed pleased with performances, despite lapses in games, and denied he was spinning it as a positive.

“It’s not spin. I’d say my reflection has been pretty fair to be honest, when we have and haven’t done well. A spin to me is that I’m making it up,” Muscat said.

“It is a genuine issue, I’m just saying I wasn’t making it up when I said when we’ve performed well. Yes it is a genuine issue and it is a fact we haven’t won, but tomorrow night has its own difficulties with everything surrounding it.

“We’ve got a resilient group, some tough characters in that group and we’re going to have to stand up tomorrow night."
