Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat has confirmed the club would like to secure the services of Heidelberg United striker Kenny Athiu.
It was reported last week Athiu was set to join Perth Glory as an injury replacement signing but there is now a possibility he will join Melbourne Victory.
Athiu has had a stellar 2017 in NPLVIC scoring 21 goals in 28 matches and scored the goal that knocked Perth out of the FFA Cup Round of 32 this year.
It was rumoured Athiu would sign a one-year-loan deal with the club. Muscat said he was keen to get his signature.
“I can confirm we’ve been speaking to Kenny’s representatives for quite a while now, so there’s no news to shed at the moment,” Muscat said on Friday.
“We’ve been speaking to him and if we can get a deal done we will but we’ll have to wait and see.”
The South Sudanese-born player arrived in Melbourne in 2004 from Kenya with his family in search for a better life.
In July he said he deserved a shot in the A-League.
FourFourTwo has contacted Athiu and Heidelberg coach George Katsakis but has not received a response.
Victory are set to meet Melbourne City tomorrow night.
