Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat says Thomas Deng’s goal of the season contender won’t get the credit it deserves simply because the fullback doesn’t have a glamour name.
Deng scored a screamer in the 51st minute to seal Victory’s 3-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday night.
The 21-year-old has now scored two goals for Victory this season which left his boss very pleased.
“It won’t get the credit it deserves because Tommy’s not a glamour name,” Muscat said post-match.
“But if there’s a better strike, taking into consideration the degree of difficulty, technique and accuracy, it was a great strike for Tommy. I was really happy for him.
“Go to Europe. If there’s a better strike this weekend around the world, then it’ll be something special.

“The further you go forward then the further you run back, so I’m trying to keep calm. Then you see Tommy, a fullback, (thinking) ‘stay in your back four and let them try and break us down’.
“I then see Terry (Antonis) in the by-line turning on his right foot, so he’s the highest player in our team and Tommy Deng is spinning from right back to get into the box. JP (assistant coach Jean-Paul de Marigny) actually calls it before he hits it saying ‘shoot, shoot’ and it was an unbelievable strike.”

Despite his manager’s comments, Deng said he was unfazed by the credit he would receive from the goal.
He added: “It doesn’t bother me, a good goal is a good goal, so it doesn’t matter what people say. You can watch the highlight and you’ll see it yourself.”
