Victory climbed to second on the table with a game in hand, defeating Newcastle Jets 2-0 at AAMI Park on Saturday.

The Blue and White have 13 points so far and Muscat believed it could have been more, stating the away 1-1 draw to Brisbane Roar and away 2-1 away loss to Sydney were unjust.

“We’ve had a good start to the season,” Muscat said after the win over Newcastle. “All in all we’re pretty pleased. It was the first time tonight that we had any real selection dilemmas.

“If I’m truthful, Jai (Ingham) was so unlucky not to be involved tonight because of his involvement last week, coming on and affecting the game the way he did.

“I struggled with that one over the last couple of nights, but what we do need is a group of players who put the team first because teams and individuals who don’t do that will be the teams that don’t succeed.”

Victory were held goalless by the Jets at half-time before Marco Rojas inspired two goals in the space of two minutes to get Victory over the line.

Muscat said they were never in danger of losing however conceded the Jets frustrated his team in the first half.

“It could have been a dangerous game for us,” he said.

“Credit to Mark Jones. They've had a number of injuries, come here with a game plan and made it very difficult for us.

“I thought we were fine getting the ball out of our back third, the difficult thing was getting the first goal and that was always going to be the hardest thing for us - getting the first goal.

“Maybe a little bit of tension crept in and that final passin the last third didn’t come off for us early and frustration built.”

Rojas’ free kick cannoned off Iain Fyfe and popped into the net seven minutes into the second half. The goal was originally awarded to the Kiwi however was overruled at full-time as an own goal to the defender.

Muscat thought the decision was incorrect.

“I don’t know what the ruling is but I thought it was on target, his strike was on target so maybe they’ll have a rethink and he’ll be awarded, I think it should be,” he said.

“It’s got to be his goal, struck it on target and deflected in.”

Replacement goalkeeper Matthew Acton who was signed two days ago stepped in for Lawrence Thomas who will be back next week from an injured finger, however Muscat praised his stand-in performance.

Mitch Austin who was substituted off for Fahid Ben Khalfallah in the 38th minute should be  available for selection next week after rolling his ankle.
